Examinations Organiser – “Out of memory”, “Exception EoleSys”, Component ‘mscomctl.ocx’ errors

Any “Out of Memory” or “Exception” type errors that are received in Examinations organiser typically occur in place of an actual error that should be received.
These error messages can happen due to the ‘mscomctl.ocx’ file being missing or incorrectly registered on the effected machine.
To resolve these errors when they occur please do the following,
(All of the below steps should be carried out with an administrator account)
On the effected machine download the resource located at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10019
Run the exe file to update Visual Basic libraries on the machine.
Then you will need to access the archive files from “VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe” – Use 7-zip or other archiving software for this
Extract the file “mscomctl.ocx”
For 64 bit systems you will want to copy this file into C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64
For Windows 32 bit copy it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
(Replace any existing file of the same name)
Once the file has been placed in the appropriate location carry out the following steps to register:
You will require a working MSCOMCTL file. This can be copied from another working workstation locally under (C:\Windows\SysWOW64). If you are unable to source this please contact your local support unit.
On the affected workstation, check under C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (C:\Users\<username>\Windows if running via remote desktop/terminal services) and if the MSCOM file is not in there, place this file in the directory. Once the file is in there, please do the following below:
Open Command Prompt and type the following:
CD C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Press Enter
Type the following:
Regsvr32 MSCOMCTL.OCX
Press Enter
This should come up with a message saying the file has been registered.
Please note, you will need to log in as an Administrator to do this if you do not have the sufficient privileges on your login.
Once this has been done, it should present a message saying the file has been registered. If not, Command Prompt will need to be Run as Administrator when you right click CMD and the options followed above again.
This will then resolve the error occurring in Examinations.
